AnnaLovesBooks
by Anna, who loves books
|
I love books. I think everyone ought to read as much as they can! FEED YOUR BRAIN! I try, but books can be expensive - so I started selling them to subsidize my habit. I dragged others into "the business", hoping to share the financial benefits. And NOW, in 2008, we're going to do more sharing than ever!
I've set a goal of 2 years. If, in those 2 years, I can't manage to make this work, I'll pack up my library and just settle down with a bunch of books.
This is where you come in - check out our books and the book-places we spend our time. Buy from us, donate to us, even sell to us. Help us to raise money AND feed your own brain while you do it! Here's everything you need to know - quick links first -

DONATE!
SELL!

|
Donate your books! Or sell us your books! Contact us and we'll do our best to make it easy for you. If you're in Chicago or the Chicago area, that's a big plus, but we're willing to try to work with anyone - so don't let the miles between us stop you!

Buy our books! We don't just sell books, either. We sell on venues you know and trust - buy from us on those venues!
Our goal is NOT to be the cheapest copy. We want to make money and we're not going to make money selling books for a penny. There are booksellers (stupid, empty-headed people...) who think pricing the lowest is best - sell a lot for very little. We're not those people. We know that we offer decent prices for decent products - and we're not looking to work very hard to earn very little.
Our Amazon storefront - All of our books gets listed here, along with some china, glass, baseball cards...
Our eBay storefront - eBay's fees are too much, so we've closed our regular store. You can find our auctions by clicking the link - or by searching eBay for "AnnaLovesBooks". Be sure to check the "Search title and description" box.
Our Half storefront - Half is only books, and only those books that have ISBNs, so there are fewer listings than Amazon.

GIVE!

Know that we - you and us - are doing good things!
We are dedicated to donating a MINIMUM of 25% of our profits to non-profit organizations that benefit young people. If profits are ever substantial enough to increase that amount, we will - but we will never, under any circumstances, donate LESS than 25%. We will, very soon, make it possible for you to see how much we've made and how much we've donated - right here, online, for all the world to see! This is just about the only way we have to prove that we're keeping our promise.
Because we're in Chicago, because we're big baseball fans, and because 3 out of the 5 of us are graduates of the program, we've chosen The Lane Tech Baseball Booster Club to be the first organization we help. If you know of others we should add to our list (and realize we can only add them if there's enough money to go around), please feel free to let us know!

There's more! I really DO love books. There are problems with this love, though. For one thing, not every book is "sellable" - sometimes, some very stupid, short-sighted people have driven the price of a book so low that selling my copy is just impossible. It would be nice, don't you think, if there was another way to get those books doing good things?
There is! They do! Check it out!
Our "unsellable" books go through a process in hopes of finding them a home. Here are some excellent ways we have found to keep books out of the landfills: |

Is FREE* a good price? I think it is.
Previously, books were moved from one of the below venues to the next every Monday. That's not working for me anymore because it ends up taking hours. SO, new rules: Unsellable books will be moved from one venue to the next in the order below as often as possible.
These sites are in order, from first to last, of my ranking of them. They all work somewhat similarly: List books to give away. When they're requested, you pay the postage and get points. You use your points to request books. Each site has their own system for points, some are international and some aren't, some have great forums and others don't, some are only books and some allow everything from DVDs and CDs to anything in the world you want to part with! Join the ones you like by clicking the banners - in some instances, I get credit for you joining and some, I don't. When you get there, look me up (AnnaLovesBooks) and we can be friends!

Now, you're thinking - that's it? It's over? Unsellable books reach ZunaFish and die there? No, they don't! They move on - but we've only started this process this year. As soon as we move books to a new venue, I'll tell you where they go next! For now, you've got plenty to keep you busy.
*Two things you must know - "free" is defined under each link I've provided. Free can, and does, vary. ALSO - very important! - free sites are NOT to be used to gather books for re-sale. Some are explicit about this, others less so. Either way, remember that these sites are not to be abused. Books we get through them are very, very, very rarely ever sold (and it is necessary for me to admit, in absolute honesty, that a handful HAVE been sold in the past. I didn't know!). These sites thrive because readers - not sellers - share their passion for the printed word.

There IS an end of the road. Not every book can find another home. It's sad, but it's true. On the plus-side, we're claiming to help the book market by destroying a few books. Sure, it's not much of a dent, but when there's 2,000 used copies available for a penny on Amazon, we think of it as a mercy killing.
Once we've weeded them out through selling them, trading them, donating them, setting them free... there's a few left. Those, I read. And every book I read, I review. I post those reviews on Amazon, PBS and other places. One of those other places will be here, sort of. After I read and review them, I render tham absolutely unreadable and give them a proper burial - with any luck, the number of books that meet this fate will be fewer and fewer as time goes on.
You can help! Buy them! :-)
Rather than post endless reviews here, I'm picking the last good book I reviewed and putting THAT ONE here. I'll make another page for older ones. Click on a title and buy from Amazon - AnnaLovesBooks makes a couple cents off it! Because by this point, we're usually talking about unsellable books, expect anything!
Gypsy Rizka by Lloyd Alexander
ISBN 0525461213 - Although I'm giving Rizka 5 stars, I do think the book's target audience of Young Adults is just a little off. The Pippi Longstocking-esque main character, the cartoon-like other characters and the storyline(s) seem to me to be more appealing to slightly younger readers. Still, a fun and well-written story.
Rizka, a gypsy who lives on the outskirts of Greater Dunitsa, where she awaits her father's return, has her finger on the pulse of the town. From Big Franko, her friend, to Chief Councilor, her nemesis, Rizka understands them all better than they understand themselves - and better than she understands herself, for that matter. Using their own fears and superstitions, Rizka "fixes" the problems of many townfolk and, in the end, teaches them a great deal and learns as much about herself.
The characters, cartoonish and very colorful, are delightful in their own weird ways, and the stories throughout all tie up neatly. The younger end of the Young Adult readers will enjoy Rizka's adventures, and probably wish for more!
